About Road Safety Education |
|
The Malaysian Road Safety Plan 2006-2010 was launched to address the issue of the alarming rise of road fatalities and injuries in the country. One of the areas that is given prominence in the plan is education. RSE provides the foundation and process to strengthen and bring about the desired behavioural modifications of a road user, in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes.
School based RSE sets out to help protect children and young people
from potential dangers on the roads and also teaches them to safely
deal with complex road situations. At an appropriate level, children
and young people will be taught:
- about dangers, hazards, risk and risk management
- the knowledge and skills required to keep them safe
- how to develop and maintain a positive attitude towards road safety
The overall aim of school based RSE is to assist children and their parents/carers to:
- understand the dangers and risks in the traffic environment
- learn and use road safety skills to keep themselves and others safer
- be law abiding, patient and considerate road users.
The RSE is being introduced into primary and secondary schools in
stages, beginning with Year One in 2008. It will be fully implemented
in all schools by 2011 and at all school levels, with exceptions of
Forms Three and Five students. The RSE is included within the existing
Bahasa Malaysia classes to strengthen the road safety skills and to
further enhance their language skills without the burden of an extra
subject.
